The 1999 National Association of Broadcaster Show in Las Vegaswas the formal introduction for the 1788R Remote Controller from Aphex Systems. The 1788R can operate up to sixteen Aphex 1788 Eight Channel Mic Preamps, or 128 channels of audio. All functions of the 1788 can be accessed from the 1788R from the mix position, remote truck or other locations.

“We designed the 1788R to be as quick and easy to use as possible,” explained Marvin Caesar, President and founder of Aphex Systems. “Even though you control multiple 1788s, you can access any of 128 channels with the push of just two buttons. While the 1788 is also controllable by computer, we feel the 1788R is more immediate and tactile and will be a better control system for many of our end users.”

Key features:

  • The Aphex 1788R has the same display and controls as the 1788 preamp.
  • An additional set of switches and LEDs select and show the status of the sixteen 1788 preamps being run by the 1788R. Three sets of LEDs indicate connection and memory status of each 1788, as well as instant clip/limit for any channel of each unit.
  • The Clip/Lim LED makes correction simple even in a busy live performance environment. When the Clip/Lim threshold is reached on any channel in a 1788, the LED stays red until that 1788 is selected. Once selected, the Clip/Lim LED on the corresponding channel stays lit until that channel is selected. This visual cue is indispensable when running up to 128 channels of audio.
  • The 1788R adds preset edit and memory to the 1788 system. While each 1788 remembers the most recent setting, the 1788R allows up to 256 presets to be stored. “There are two practical principals behind the 1788R. The first is that people want one knob, one job and the 1788R gets very, very close to that ideal,” stated Caesar on the primary design criteria for the 1788.

“The second is that you want smaller and smaller mixing areas in the audience, since seating space is valuable. The 1788R takes up very little space, but controls up to 32 rack spaces and 128 channels of audio, with the hardware being on-stage where space is at less of a premium. In addition, having the preamps on-stage close to the mics provides the best possible sound.”

“Another key to the success of the 1788R is its ability to preset each channel and have up to 256 memory locations that can be recalled instantly,” Caesar explained. “The 1788R has the ability to call up the next preset and have it ready to load instantly. You can also create and edit presets off-line, so in the middle of a show you can adjust the next preset without affecting the current live performance.”

with multiple 1788Rs or PCs. This makes control possible from multiple locations. The 1788 system is elegant in its logic and practicality. Each unit includes eight remote controlled mic preamps. These are located on stage as close as possible to the microphones. Up to sixteen 1788s can be controlled from a single 1788R Remote Controller located at the house mix position, remote truck or other site. The 1788 splits the preamplified signal, reducing the need for expensive, awkward, often noisy splitters. With the optional 1788-1 Digital Module, additional digital signals can be sent to production and recording equipment in the three most popular digital formats.

For example, the 1788R can be located in the control booth for operation while the 1788 preamps are on the sound stage. This allows long lines to be run without RF and electrical interference and, with the 1788-1 Digital Module, sends a digital audio signal directly to digital recorders for maximum headroom and quality.

The 1788R is a 17” wide, 5.25” tall and 2” thick box that can sit on a console, on a table or in a rack. It is attached by an umbilical cord to a rack mount connector box which contains the power supply for the 1788R and connections to the 1788s. Multiple 1788R systems can be interconnected to themselves or PCs. The Aphex 1788R is available June, 1999 at Aphex Retailers worldwide.
