Feeling that most short scale guitars are little more than toys, Dean Guitars has introduced two new guitars based on popular Dean designs to buck that trend. The EVO J, based on Dean's EVO line of guitars, is a 22.7" scale instrument with a 1 5/8" nut. The slightly longer scale and wider nut make this guitar much more playable than most of the mini guitars currently on the market according to Dean. The EVO J has 2 high output Humbucking pickups, 1 volume, 1 tone control, and a 3-way pickup selector. The bridge is a one piece design allowing adjustment for action and intonation.
The Avalanche J is similar in dimension to the EVO J with a 22.7" scale neck and a 1 5/8" nut width but, like the Avalanche 1S, the Avalanche J has 3 single coil pickups, 1 volume, 1 tone control, and a 5 way switch. The center pickup is reverse wound/reverse polarity to eliminate hum in the 2nd and 4th positions. The Avalanche J uses the same bridge as the EVO J allowing for optimum set up. Even though these guitars were originally designed for students and smaller players, they can also be tuned up a minor third or a full fourth for a completely different sound.
