Get Tubular with Seymour Duncan's New Lipstick Tubes

May 16, 2000

From the late-'50s and -'60s models built in New Jersey by the late Nathan Daniel to the imports of today, Danelectro® guitars have always stood for form following function. The characteristic long, rounded pickups look like lipstick tubes because, in the originals at least, that's exactly what they were. Seymour Duncan has responded to an outpouring of customer requests to offer a direct replacement pickup for Danelectro guitars as well as a pickguard-mount lipstick tube pickup for Strat® guitars.

Seymour Duncan took the original spec lipstick tubes and filled them with a tone machine that will add sparkle, jangle, and shimmer to an old Danelectro®, and greatly enhanced punch, bite, and "cut" to a new one. Duncan builds their lipstick tube pickups inside chrome-plated brass tubes using Alnico VI magnets, just like the originals. As a bonus, the neck pickup is reverse wound, reverse polarity ("RW/RP"), creating a hum-canceling effect when both pickups are used together.

Duncan also announced the release of a lipstick tube pickup for Strat® guitars. In addition to the ultra-hip cosmetics of the direct-retrofit tubes, tone-wise, they give a Strat a smooth and glassy high-end with a nice bump in the upper-mids. They offer exceptional dynamics, a very cool "throaty" quality, and a healthy dose of traditional Strat "quack." For a great sounding and visually striking Strat setup, Duncan recommends a Custom Bridge version together with an RW/RP in the middle position and a regular version in the neck. The result will be exceptional pickup-to-pickup balance with increased output in the bridge position and hum-canceling in positions #2 and #4 on the five-way switch.

Like all Seymour Duncan and Basslines pickups, Duncan's lipstick tubes are hand-built in Santa Barbara, California.
