If you can play the root notes, you can Jam. This is why it is important to learn the notes of the fretboard. There are many great resources on this website that will help you learn this.

It is important to know these note names because you can use them to jam with your friends. Let's say your guitar buddy comes in and says " Dude... I found this chord progression last night... (Amin7, D9) or (E,G,A) or whatever.

You can manage by playing the root notes, (A,D) (E,G,A)
