Aphex Systems announced that their Model 228 8-channel unidirectional audio level interface is now shipping. Designed for applications including installation in recording/mastering, broadcast, and serious home theater and audiophile systems, the 228 offers a high-quality method of interfacing audio between consumer-level and professional-level components.

Aphex' Model 228 offers a method of simultaneously converting up to eight channels of audio from consumer level --10dBV to professional level +4dBu. The design priority Aphex chose for the Model 228 is audio quality, so it implements high voltage impedance balanced outputs and ground loop isolating unbalanced inputs. The 228's audio circuitry was carefully crafted throughout to maximize sonic performance for all multichannel applications.

The front panel extended range VU meter allows for individual calibration and monitoring of each channel. Eight 2-color signal presence/clip lights instantly indicate if sound is present on each channel and if overload occurs. Front panel gain trims for all eight channels are included for balancing the match gain. Fully clockwise, gain is calibrated to the reference 11.78dB. Counterclockwise, the trimmer attenuates by 12dB for unity gain. For theater installations, a provision is made to dim all the lights on the front panel. Also, a test CD with commonly used reference levels is included for easily matching up your specific equipment.

Interfacing the Aphex Model 228 is easy, with eight standard unbalanced RCA input jacks and eight balanced XLR output connectors. Its compact 1U rackmount design and weight of only 5 pounds makes the 228 ideal for unobtrusive installations. In addition to its ability to interface tools like consumer-level multichannel DVD or CD players with professional equipment, the Aphex Model 228 is an excellent choice for music composers who use synthesizers and samplers with unbalanced outputs. With eight discrete channels, four stereo output pairs can be easily connected simultaneously.

The new Aphex Model 228 will available from Aphex dealers in April at a suggested retail price of $349.
