Fretless Intonation Studies

by Ian Hunter

This lesson is designed to force your left hand into an unusual physical shape but still shows that intonation must be maintained as well as proper posture with the thumb and fingers. Play each note with each finger, the E string with your index, A string with middle, D string with the ring, and G string with the little. Each note must be clean and distinct, so start slowly and make all shifts exact and in time with the metronome. Work your way up the entire fretboard, then back down. With 5 and 6 string basses, the index plays the B and E string, and the little finger playe the G and C string. While your left hand is occupied, your right hand should be also be plucking the note to be played with the same attack, and muted where necessary. Economy of movement is essential at all times.
