Now that you have that down, let's take it one step further.

Try running a Cmaj7 up and down each string but include all the available tensions. In this case the available tensions for a Cmaj7 chord are 9(D), #11(F#), 13(A).

Start each string with either the lowest available chord tone or tension.

Wow, it looks like a Cmajor scale! You are now starting to see the key of Cmajor up and down each string. When the chord passes by in a tune all the available notes will lite up like a pinball machine inside you minds eye!
