Slim Jim Phantom's birth name is James McDonnell, and he was born on 20 March 1960 in Brooklyn, New York, and grew up in/along the Long Island area.

Jim, along with bass player Lee Rocker and guitarist/front man Brian Setzer, formed the Rockabilly band The Stray Cats. With a unique stand up drumming style, his simplicity has become renowned in the rockabilly scene.

The Stray Cats split for a while in the mid-1980's, and during that time, Phantom and Rocker joined together with guitarist Earl Slick to form the eponymous group Phantom, Rocker, & Slick. The group recorded two albums, the first of which included the hit Men Without Shame.

Jim Phantom is the owner of 'The Cat Club' on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles, California. He is also the drummer for the pyschobilly band entitled Headcat. It features Lemmy, from the late 1970s/1980s rock band Motörhead.

In addition, Jim was married to Britt Ekland between the years of 1984 and 1992 . They had one son "TJ McDonnell von Shrempkin" who now works at the Roxy in hollywood and also plays in the band "The LMNOP"
