Musical Gifts for Kids - what to buy for a 10-11-year-old

Posted by Jim Burger on Dec 10, 2014

These days, it's pretty well understood that making music makes kids smarter. That's why so many parents (like you) are interested in buying musical gifts for their kids during the holidays. But with so many choices out there, what's the right thing to buy? In this series of articles, we'll attempt to give you a few ideas of what might be appropriate for different age children as they start their journey through the world of music...
What Musical Instruments are Appropriate for 10-11 Year-Olds?
So your child is really starting to grow up, and now that they're in the thick of things at school it's important to focus on extra-curricular interests -- especially ones that don't involve staring at a screen! What better way for a growing tween to express their personality than through music? At this age, children have the coordination and abilities to play almost any instrument. They also probably have some stars or entertainers that they admire and might want to emulate. Now is the time to get started with a musical instrument, or continue to develop your child's musical interests!
What's the perfect gift for your 10-11 year-old? For starters, the most important thing to note is that there is no single answer to this question. The right instrument for your child depends on his or her personality, as well as on your taste as a parent. An active, rambunctious child will probably go for drums or electric guitar, while a quiet, pensive child might prefer acoustic guitar or keyboard. At this age, even band instruments like saxophone or clarinet are a possibility, if your school has a band this is a great opportunity. Once you come up with an idea, there are lots of choices...
Here are some of our top choices for 10- and 11-year-old musicians-to-be:
