Fender® FR-50 Wood-body Resonator Guitar - Sunburst, Roundneck

Playability: Great for blues,little hand fatigue,action too low for serious slide players,but that can be changed(great slide tone though)

Durability: Bridge saddle not as secure as most guitars due to the softer string angle at bridge,but for most players,this guitar is a perfect starter resonator

I had been fiddling with several Regals, as the real Dobros are out of my price range. When I saw the Fender with those cute soundholes, I knew I had to have one. You can't have a great guitar for this kind of money, but the Fender succeeds in looking and sounding like an instrument twice its price tag.

Features: Made in Korea. Top is very thick plywood, with an extra inch around the cone seating. A very well made spider bridge, but the bridge saddles need some attention before use. Likewise the cone itself. For some reason the cone seating is not level, but bends slightly upwards towards the neck of the guitar. This makes the spider/cone setup more difficult than it should be. The cone is screwed on to the seating, which is, so I've been told, totally unacceptable. I just ordered a McIntyre transducer for the Fender after hearing many pleasant things about it. So far I've played the thing with a small AKG bug microphone. The sound is fine, but you have to decide which kind of sound you want. If you pin the mic onto the resonator cover, the treble sounds are fine, but the bass is all but missing. You can get a more balanced sound if you attach the mic on the F-holes, but then the sound is not very resonator-like. Overall, very nice instrument, once you set it up correctly. Nobody should settle for the out-of-the-box sound, the FR50 can do better.

Playability: The neck is very Fenderish, great for treating the FR50 like a modern acoustic. It's not really a bona fide resonator, using a slide is quite awkward. Build quality is surprisingly high, especially compared to my other Korean guitar, a 12-string Ovation Celebrity Deluxe.

Sound: It really needs a good setup job before it starts to sing. On my guitar, the spider was screwed on so hard it had made huge dents on the cone. It took several hours of very carefully conducted work to fix this. Now it sounds fine.

Durability: An all-plywood construction, this thing is expected to stand every kind on abuse a player can think of inflicting upon it.

Awesome. If anyone is considering buying a resonator, buy the Fender FR50. I love it. Can't believe I played with any other brand or make of resonator.

Features: Round neck. Spruce top. Mahogany back & sides. Rosewood fingerboard. 21 fret neck. Snowflake inlays. Die-cast tuners.

Playability: Awesome. Very fluid. Easy on the fingers too.

Sound: I can wail some acoustic blues on it, or my friend can pick it up and pick some bluegrass tunes out. Great 'swampy' ringy tone.

Durability: Haven't had it very long, but so far has held up very well. Climate changes don't seem to have much of an effect on it.
