Nirvana - The Bass Guitar Collection*

This is a great transcription book covering some of the best of Nirvanas material. The music is well covered, and the transcription provides what it promises. No mistakes on the tabbing like most transcription books have and it is not a challenging book.

If you like Nirvana....you'll most liekly enjoy this book. Its a calaboration of Nirvana songs form all of their albums. It has mainly the big hits. The only thing im upset about is I hoped for a little more songs, and not just the more popular titles.

This book is a must for bassists into Nirvana containing accurate to recording notation and tablature for the bass lines of 18 Nirvana hits. Most of the songs included are pretty straight foreward and a lot of fun to play which is great for beginner players who want to rock out but can't transcribe themselves or play the more complicated tab books available (like me). Many of the songs in this book should also be of intrest to intermediate players, such as the brilliant bass led 'Stay Away' which is a great addition for any players repetoir. As a progressing beginner I found this book very useful in terms of helping me understand how effective bass lines are constructed. For me these transcriptions where my first insight into playing whole pieces, using the songs tabbed in this book have opened up to me certain nuances of playing that the average 'teach yourself bass' book left confused.
My main gripe with this book revolves around song choice... although the neccessary fantastic hits are present, several of the choices (only a minority though) like Pennyroyalty although fantastic to listen to have very boring bass lines... this may be to do with the books attempt to represent all era's of Nirvana, although I found it disappointing that some of the crazier stuff like Hairspray Queen (mad bass line!) does not make an appearence as do many Nirvana classics with more intrersting bass which have been ommitted in favour of the well known numbers. However I would still thourghly recommend this book for beginner-intermediate bassists with an intrest in grunge. Although more advanced players may require something with a bit more 'meat' to get their teeth into.
