Music Reading for Guitar

Teach you how to sightread notes from the staff. Excellent book.

A great book consisting of melodic reading exercises in the fifth, open, 8va in fifth, twelth, second, third and seventh positions and rhythm exercises. The melodic exercises consist of "nonsense melodies" (as the author calls them) that require the student to go slow and develop pitch accuracy and classical melodies (Bach, Mozart, Chopin) that the author says will help develop a great sense of four-bar phrasing. Students develop eye movement by reading the rhythm exercises down and up the page, backwards and in boxes (reading two four-bar lines as follows: measure 1, then 8, 4, 5, 2, 7, 3 then 6). Two of my 11 year old students are working in this book after completing Mel Bay Modern Method Volume One, and it's helping them tremendously. Each student is simultaneously starting in the Carcassi Method for classical and Jody Fischer's Beginning Jazz Guitar, and appear to be in great shape to handle the material in the new books, thanks in large part to what we've covered thus far in David Oakes' book over the last few months.

This is a great book for beginners to use when learning to read music.
