I purchased the Fernandes Retrorocket Elite because I wanted a Sustainer and didn't want to have someone take a router to the back of one of my other guitars to install one. Little did I know that the Retrocket Elite was going to turn out to be one of the nicest guitars I own.
The neck on this guitar is probably as close to perfect as any neck I've ever played. Incredibly smooth and perfectly shaped - slim but not too slim from frets one through seven, and then it gets nice and meaty as you move down to the 22nd fret. The fretwork, particularly the fret ends, is literally as good as I've ever seen. The fact that this is a set neck rather than a bolt-on makes for perfectly smooth and easy access to the upper frets - far superior to any bolt-on Strat. The fit and finish on this guitar is impeccable. The Swamp Ash body is a little heavier than Alder and the result is that this is a solid guitar, noticeably heavier than my Fender Eric Johnson, but not too heavy at all.
As for the Sustainer, I love it as much as I thought I would and it becomes something that is hard to live without. I wish every one of my guitars had one. As for battery usage, I've only had two battery changes so far so, in my experience, excessive changing of batteries has not been a consideration. The pickups are hot and they are actually very nice. Though I am hooked on DiMarzio Evolutions and Fender Eric Johnson pickups, I am reluctant to change the middle and bridge pickups because, as a whole, this guitar is so satisfying and has its own identity and character to a degree that I honestly don't want to risk disturbing it in any way. The trem unit is excellent. The first Wilkinson trem I've ever had. My only quibble with it is that it requires tightening of the tremolo bar with a hex key to keep it from falling out of the bridge and I always find that to be a pain.
To sum up, I have quite a few guitars, many of which are high-end instruments and, after owning one of these, I am amazed that Fernandes has not captured a much larger portion of the market, especially with this guitar because, for what you get, the $1199 that I paid for this was money well spent. An absolutely superior instrument.
