The concerto seeks to combine the energy, lyricism, and virtuosity of the piano with that of wind instruments and percussion. It also endeavors to continue the path of the 20th century piano concerto as it moved through Rachmaninoff, Prokoviev, Shostakovich and Bartok, to Samuel Barber, John Corigliano and others. All twelve tones are used freely, uninhibited by classic 12-tone technique. This freedom allows for an occasional sugges- tion of tonality, often at moments of resolution, but without further definition of tonality. Solo piano part and score available for sale. Parts available as rental items from Eastman School of Music.
