A Brazilian style samba, BUDS is an outstanding showcase for a jazz trumpet soloist. Brilliantly arranged by Alan Baylock, this composition by jazz trumpeter Randy Brecker opens up with the melody stated by 2nd trumpet, alto, tenor, 1st trombone and guitar. The ensemble further develop the melody which leads into the solo where playing over a smooth samba groove, the 2nd trumpet soloist builds the intensity over supporting backgrounds from the ensemble. Auxiliary percussion featuring shaker and cowbell can really enhance this chart. The brass range takes lead trumpet to written Eb and lead trombone to Bb. A superb chart for an experienced band.
