Pete Thorn demonstrates the Pigtronix Philosopher's Tone effects pedal, which is a compressor & sustainer, but also with a built-in distortion (the grit control), which works nicely with the compression.

This video will really give you a sense of what the Philosopher's Tone adds to the sound, whether it be clean, just breaking up, or full-on overdrive.
